Winnipeg to Regina
575 km of straight prairie highway across Manitoba and into Saskatchewan
Route Overview
This is the quintessential prairie drive. The Trans-Canada between Winnipeg and Regina is flat, straight, and fast. Highway 1 is divided four-lane for much of the route with a 110 km/h speed limit. You can cover the distance in under 6 hours with minimal stops. The challenge is not the road but staying mentally engaged over 575 km of agricultural flatland.
That said, there is genuine beauty here if you are open to it. The prairie sky is enormous. Sunrises and sunsets paint the entire horizon. Grain elevators punctuate the landscape like prairie cathedrals. And the towns along the way, while small, have their own character.
Winnipeg to Brandon (215 km)
Leaving Winnipeg on Highway 1 westbound, you pass through the western suburbs and quickly reach open farmland. Portage la Prairie, about 85 km west, is the first significant stop at the junction with Highway 16 (the Yellowhead Route to Saskatoon and Edmonton).
Portage la Prairie
Population 13,000. Named for the portage between the Assiniboine River and Lake Manitoba. Full services: fuel, Tim Hortons, Walmart, restaurants. Fort la Reine Museum covers local history. The island park in Crescent Lake is a pleasant 10-minute leg stretch.
Brandon
Manitoba's second-largest city (population 50,000). Full services and a good meal stop with options beyond highway chains. The Assiniboine River runs through downtown. Brandon University gives the town a younger energy. Canadian Tire, hospital, and mechanics available.
Brandon to Saskatchewan Border (140 km)
West of Brandon, the highway continues through Virden (oil country, good fuel prices) to the Saskatchewan border. Virden has a charming downtown with heritage buildings from the oil boom era.
Saskatchewan Border to Regina (220 km)
Entering Saskatchewan, you pass through Moosomin, Whitewood, and Indian Head. Fuel is available in each town. Saskatchewan does not observe daylight saving time, so check your clock at the border.
Regina
Saskatchewan's capital (population 230,000). The RCMP Heritage Centre is the standout attraction. Wascana Centre is a massive urban park. Cathedral Village on 13th Avenue has the best independent restaurants. Full city services for vehicle or supply needs.
Staying Alert
Driver fatigue is the primary hazard. The road is straight and flat. Pull over at rest areas every 90 minutes. Audio books and podcasts help. Avoid driving this section at night unless necessary.
